Simple Treat: Violet Candy
I’ve been spending a lot of time identifying plants. I have to stick with the basics and start somewhere before i jump into the more crazy plants out there!
Violets are very common, and growing everywhere around here. So we decided to make some yummy violet candies.
Let me say, these are way too labor intensive for me and will only be making this big of batch again when we have a daughter who is getting married. So literally…that will never happen.
The process is simple…
Pick some violets, keep the stem attached for now.
Beat an egg white till frothy.
Grind some white sugar till very fine.
Here’s the time consuming part. Holding by the stem dip flower in egg then sprinkle sugar. Sounds easy enough right? Well it’s not, just try it.
Try Keeping the shape of the violets, Place on wax paper.
Clip the stem off.
Repeat with all flowers.
Fast forward over an hour or so…
Place in warm oven or dehydrator till completely dry.
Beautiful little candied violets perfect for topping cupcakes or devouring by the handful like Jace and Kasen did.
And a bonus:
Violet is very nutritious. It has ascorbic acid, vit A, C and iron. The leaves and flowers are both edible, throw them in your next salad!
The flowers and leaves can even help in treating coughs. You make A tea, cough syrup or a gargle for mouth and throat infections. Amazing plants are all around us!
