Wake Up Wednesday: A Day Older

We spend our days rushing through the moments, distracting ourselves with facebook and emails to ‘pass the time’. We rush children through dinner, to throw them into the tub, to hurry up and get clean so they can be rushed off to bed. What if we took a little more time with each of these tasks?

Last night i found myself frustrated. We had put the boys to bed and just like every night, dear K-Man called from his bed, “Mooooooom. Mom can i ask you one thing?”.

And just like every single other night i knew the question he would ask, or at least had it narrowed down to the top 3. And sure enough, it was the same question.

Then not 2 minutes later….”mom….can i ask you just one more thing”. And again, he asked a question he asks every single night. After two more of these “one more questions” i was frustrated and annoyed.

Why can’t he just GO TO SLEEP! I want some down time, i want some non kid time. I don’t want to be bothered anymore! As i sat there waiting for him to get done with his ‘last question’ this quote came to my mind…

Young boys should never be sent to bed… they always wake up a day older. – J.M. Barrie

My little man just needs reassured every night. He likes to know where everyone is, what we are doing, and then his little mind is at ease. So i put down what i was doing and went and laid in bed with him. Maybe tomorrow he’ll stop needing the reassurance, maybe tomorrow he’ll be all grown up, maybe tomorrow he won’t want me to cuddle beside him. So take the opportunity today. We are all a day older when we wake up, enjoy the precious moments. Stop and really enjoy them.

Well said, Amber. It is a struggle, but to pause and have this realization at the forefront of our minds will make us happier, our children more secure and maybe we’ll be less remorseful when they are all grown up.

Thanks Trish. Sometimes it’s so good to just take a moment, a real moment. šŸ™‚

There’s ‘a-ha’ moments everywhere….we just miss a lot of them.

I had to smile & cry a little, as I read this…our youngest, our extra blessing, wanted me to lay by her every night until sometime during her 3rd grade yr. Many nights I would feel so frustrated knowing I wanted to be doing something else, having “my time” & thinking ‘will this ever end?’ Well it did. And sometimes when I think back to those yrs I realise how special that time really was~laying by her answering her questions, listening to her dreams & ideas. She’s going to be 13 in just a couple of weeks & she doesn’t ask me to lay by her anymore…sigh

Awww Cyndee, isn’t it so funny when we’re going through these small moments how frustrating they are and then we look back and see how precious these moments were. Gets me every time.
