A midnights Who?
The door swings open and Ranger stands in the darkened doorway. Standing there leaning against the wall trying to catch his breath he manages to puff out the words, “shoes, get your shoes”.
As we threw on our shoes and piled in the car Rangers breathing had slowed some and he began giving directions to where we were driving.
A few minutes later we pulled off and parked. The moonlight was beaming off of the lake and the sky was spray painted with every star you could ever imagine.
Ranger signaled up ahead with his flashlight and one of his fellow Rangers fired a return signal back to us with his light. We crept quietly in the dark and gathered around waiting to see what we were brought out here to see. There, high up in the branches were two adolescent Great Horned Owls. Their screeches have been piercing the nights for months now. And there they sit, side by side, looking straight at us with their piercing yellow eyes. Their looks of confusion meet our looks of awe and wonder. Momma is no doubt watching intently from somewhere above to see if her babies can catch their own food.
These birds of prey are amazing to see, at home, in their own environment. No cages. Completely free in the wild. We could have stayed out watching them all night. But duty called and there was a Rattler that needed relocated.
Great horned owls were seen at Lake Chelan State Park in Chelan Washington.
